2010

Lapeer, MI

Our Sixth annual Rotary Rollin' Derby will be held during Lapeer Days on Sunday August 22 at 1pm. Since we had a great turn out for 2009, we will limit the number of cars to 20. So be sure to register early and secure a spot as many drivers will be returning. We will also be selling 7 of the derby cars from the past 5 years if you don't have the resources to build them. Financing is available with favorable terms! All proceeds will go to the Rotary Club of Lapeer to fund community projects (including the Soap Box Derby). If you are interested, please contact us and check back periodically for more details. Here are the details so far...

The Rotary Club of Lapeer thanks all the parents and drivers who participated in the build days over the past few weeks. And a special thank you to our friend Jerry at B & B Hot Dog for provding gift certificates for our 1st, 2nd, 3rd place winners as well as free dogs, chips, and drinks during our build day. Special thanks to the Lapeer East Robotics Team for their help planning and working the event, Jared at Byer's Towing for hauling our ramp and cars for the past 5 years, Beckwith's Body Shop for the use of their parking lot (pit row), Lapeer Police and Public Works for letting us block the road and providing safety barriers, and especially the spectators who cheered us on! The event would not be possible without the support of our founding sponsors K's Auto and Cypress Computer Systems.

We actually used our electronic timing system this year and it worked perfectly. Thanks to Will Stanton at Cypress Computer Systems, Inc. for inventing and operating it!

The good news is that we had the largest field ever. The bad news, it overwhelmed the event organizers a little and we got off to a late start but managed to catch up. The weather was perfect! We had 4 heats with 9 races each. The Rotary Class had 10 entires and the Stock Class had 8 drivers (9 cars). Mariah Hobbs and her friend Miranda captured the theme of this year's Lapeer Days of "Blast from the Past" with their coordinated tie-dyed shirts, custom uppolstered seat (adjustable), and their flower power car design. Jose Rodriguez not only finished first with the best accumulated time but his excellent restoration of vintage wheels and new-built traditional wood body, brought many of back to the "good ole days" of soap box racing. Lucas McFall received a set of new Z-Glas wheels for next year's race. Aaron learned some hard engineering lessons when a steering malfunction caused a crash in the 2nd race. We have a feeling he will have the most secure steering and brakes next year!

We used total time over 4 heats to determine the placement this year. The thought was that it would cancel out timing discrepancies due to human error and adverse lane conditions (alternating lanes). It is obvious that electronic timing is needed and the engineers at Cypress Computer Systems are already working on the project for next year.

This year, we will run round-robin heats within each class. The number of wins will determine placements. In case of a tie, best median time will be used.

This year saw the introduction of the awesome, new ramp. Much faster speeds challenged the drivers to stay straight and stop before hitting the hay bails at the bottom of the hill.

2005

Lapeer, MI

As far as we know, there had never been a "soap box derby" held in Lapeer before 2005. If anyone knows or has pictures of such an event in the past, please let us know. Otherwise, Lapeer's first Rotary Rollin' Derby can trace it's beginnings to a small town in New Jersey called Keyport. Current president of the Rotary Club of Lapeer , Tony Diodato, grew up in Keyport and yes, that's him in the 1972 photograph. His dad is shown with the car he built for a kid named "Punkin Brown" in 1950 (no, i'm not making this up). The sport has been around since 1934. We will be sponsoring a small exhibition derby during Lapeer Days, Sunday at 1pm to 3pm. Since there is only a 2 hour time slot available, participation was limited to 10 cars this year. If you are interested in building a car for next year, please let us know so we can plan a larger event. This race is not associated with the "All American Soap Box Derby" but visit their web site listed below where there is a large amount of information on this sport as well as an online store where you can buy kits and plans.
